Now You Are 18

The printing and distribution of Now You Are 18, a copyrighted legal education publication, is an ongoing project of the Texas Lawyers Auxiliary, auxiliary to the State Bar of Texas. The purpose of the book is to explain some of the new rights you have, areas of the law that you want to or should know about, as well as your legal obligations once you become age 18 in the state of Texas.

The first printing of Now You Are 18 was in 1987, with several addendum issues. The entire book was rewritten in 2003 with a new look to update and add important information. The material is a summary of the laws and it should be noted that exceptions and special circumstances do exist. The book is offered at a non-profit price plus postage and handling.

The book has been recommended by educators, parents, and members of the legal community. It has been used in Government, Social Studies, and Business Law classes, as well as Law Day, Career Day, Job Training Programs, and various other non-classroom settings. A number of law firms have presented books to their clients.

TLA’s goal is to see that each Texas high school senior receives a copy of the book, with a portion of class time used in its presentation. Funding is usually provided in each community by law or education related organizations, or by schools themselves.

Orders are accepted year round and shipment is by UPS or US Mail, usually within two weeks. Postage costs are estimated and include handling fees. Payment is due before books will be shipped. Schools may use a purchase order, to be billed later. Please download and use the order form to assure proper processing.

Room sets are popular with teachers who want to use them repeatedly with different groups of students. Non-copyrighted ancillary material such as worksheets, lesson plans, suggested test questions, and any addendums (when necessary) will be posted on the Law Related Education website - - texaslre.org/studentoutreach.html.
