What? "The Pipeline Project," involves an attorneyvisiting a fourth or fifth grade classroom at least four times per school year.
Why? The attorney will encourage fourth and fifth grade students to achieve educational success as well as introduce them to our legal system and the law. Often times the lack of mentors compounded by a lack of resources keeps children from finishing school, attending college, and seeking a higher
level education including a law degree. In particular,
at-risk and poor students fail to achieve educational success.
Who? Attorneys interested in going into a fourth or fifth grade classroom and working with students.
Time Commitment? Four classroom visits per school year is the goal of the project. The commitment will last two-years. The hope is that during the second year the attorney will work with the same school at a different grade level.
How do I find a school to partner with?
Attorneys are encouraged to contact a fourth or fifth grade teacher they know and would like to work with. If an attorney does not have a specific teacher in mind, then every effort will be made to match them with a classroom in their area.
Will the State Bar provide assistance?
Materials are provided for the classroom presentations. The attorneys will be given a curriculum designed for that specific grade level. All the activities promote interactive communication between the attorney and the students. The curriculum will include:
- Fourth Grade: Texas History, Student led Interview of Attorney-Mentor (Press Conference), Where do Attorney’s Work? (Community Map), Lone Star Waves Proudly (Flag salute case), Characters in a Trial, and The State of Texas v. Harry Will (Scripted Mock Trial).
- Fifth Grade: Lesson One-Recognize Your Rights, Lesson Two-Constitution Quilt, Lesson Three-Building the Constitution Train and Lesson Four-All Aboard.
Additional on-line lessons will be provided at texaslre.org, as well as interactive website games for attorneys wanting to visit the classroom more than four times during the school year.
