For Teaching Excellence In Law Focused Education

Purpose:

To recognize those educators who have made an outstanding contribution to law focused education and whose programs:
(1) foster understanding of the values of our legal and judicial systems;
(2) inform and educate students as to the roles in society of the law, the courts, the law enforcement agencies, and the legal profession;
(3) stimulate a deeper sense of individual responsibility, instructing students to recognize their duties, as well as their rights;
(4) encourage effective law focused education programs in their schools or communities;
and (5) increase communication and understanding between students, educators, and those involved professionally in the legal system.

Awards:

Both the individual and team categories will be notified by May 30, 2011. Individuals and teams will be awarded $500 to be used to purchase law focused education materials or to cover travel expenses to attend an educational conference. The director of the Department of Public Service/Law-Related Education at the State Bar of Texas will be responsible for approving the use of these funds.

Eligibility:

Any public or private school classroom teacher in the state of Texas with a minimum of five years experience may apply for the Leon Jaworski Award for Teaching Excellence. Two or more teachers may enter as a team if they show effective teamwork. College and university professors are not eligible.

Entry Rules:

  1. Applicants may choose to participate in one of two categories: Individual or Team (two or more educators). One of the team members must be a classroom teacher.

  2. Each Nomination application packet should include:

    Cover letter stating whether application is for an individual or team award, applicant's contact information, principal's name, school address, and phone number; and superintendent's name, address, and phone number.

    Nominee's resume (Two pages maximum)

    One page summary of the nominee's LRE activities

A maximum of five (5) letters of recommendation from individuals who have knowledge of nominee's contributions to LRE. One of the letters must be from a district or regional level curriculum and instruction specialist.

Other pertinent materials, such as summaries and/or descriptions of lessons, bibliography of LRE materials written by nominee, resolutions or citations which demonstrate the nominee's merit, newspaper articles, etc..

Each applicant's nomination packet can not exceed twenty-five (25) one-sided 8.5" x 11" pages.

A total of five (5) copies of the applicant's nomination packet must be submitted for review by the committee.

Prohibition:

Entries will be disqualified automatically if they do not comply fully with the entry rules governing the form of application. Entry packets written for other awards will not be accepted. Materials prepared by any member(s) of the State Bar of Texas staff are also ineligible.

Judging:

The judging committee will be composed of members from the boards of Law Focused Education, Inc., the Texas Young Lawyers Association, and the State Bar of Texas Law Focused Education Committee.

Among other factors, applicants applying for the awards will be judged on the basis of one or more of the following criteria:

  1. leadership in the teaching profession in promoting law focused education;
  2. initiative in the development of law focused educational materials.
  3. initiative in the development of law focused programs in local schools;
  4. effective use of community resource persons in support of law focused education
  5. excellence in the instruction of law focused education
  6. evidence that law focused educational materials are currently being used in the classroom
