There is no better way to start out a teaching career than by attending the Hatton W. Sumners/State Bar of Texas Law-Related Education Social Studies Student Teacher Institute. Over the past twelve years, the State Bar of Texas Law Related Education and the Hatton W Sumners Foundation have enriched pre-service through first-year teachers with this valuable institute. The goal of this institute is to expose beginning and future elementary, middle and high school teachers to strategies and programs which help them be better civic educators.
In an effort to address the needs of teachers of specific grade levels, the Hatton W. Sumners Student Teacher Institute will focus on teachers of grades K-5 on June 11-12, 2012 and teachers of grades 6, middle school and high school on June 13-15, 2012. All materials distributed are correlated with the TEKS standards and the TAKS test. Lessons also include gifted and talented/advanced placement extensions. New teachers are required by the State of Texas to get 150 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit every five years. You must be certified (passed all exit exams and graduated) before you can begin accumulating these hours.
Regarding the June 11-15, 2012 institute, you have the following options:
If you are certified by July, 2012, all 40 hours will count toward the state requirement of 150 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours every five years.
If you are not certified by July, 2012, you may still attend the institute. You will receive a certificate for 40 hours staff development credit that will help you prepare for your teaching career and that may be listed on your résumé.
If you do not graduate until 2014, you may still attend the institute this July and will receive valuable training that will help prepare for your student teaching and teaching career.
Your $50.00 holding fee will be returned after completion of the institute. Space is limited to sixty participants. The deadline for applications is May 4, 2012. After registering, if for any reason you find you cannot attend, please notify the LRE office at least two weeks prior to the institute so that your space may be given to someone on the waiting list, and your holding fee will be returned.
