Hatton W. Sumners Academy

The Academy consists of 3 independent topic days. Participants can select to attend one or all three days.

Day 1: Federalism and Constitutional Challenges from Articles of Confederation to Reconstruction: 
After exploring the reasons the founding fathers chose a federal system of government, participants will analyze historical events from the Articles of the Confederation to Reconstruction dealing with the role of the state and national governments—along with the constitutional challenges that have arisen as a result. Targeted TEKS addressed include 8th grade American History.

 
Day 2: Federalism and Constitutional Challenges from 1877 to the Present: After reviewing the characteristics of a federal system, participants will explore the examples from Reconstruction to the present that illustrate the changing role of the state and federal governments and the constitutional crises that have risen as a result. Targeted TEKS addressed include 11th grade U.S. History.

 
Day 3: The Founding Documents (Mt. Pleasant-ESC8)
This six hour workshop for middle school social studies educators will focus on the important documents of World Cultures, Texas History, and American History. Select documents will be analyzed with teachers walking away with classroom ready lessons.

Day 3: Analyzing American Political Divisions Beginning with the Federalist/Anti-Federalist Debate to the Present (Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD)
This six hour workshop for middle school social studies educators will focus on the important documents of World Cultures, Texas History, and American History. Select documents will be analyzed with teachers walking away with classroom ready lessons.
