101 Lubbock Hatton W. Sumners Institutes on the Founding Documents
Elementary (Third through Fifth Grades), Middle School, and High School
Hatton W. Sumners was a Texas Congressman from 1913 to 1947 and Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee for fourteen years. Congressman Sumners believed that the strength of democracy lay in appreciation and knowledge of its heritage and principles. The institutes are funded by a grant from the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation. Emphasis is placed on exploration of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, Federalist Papers, Anti-Federalist writings, and the First Amendment.
Sessions with scholars provide content and background. Sessions with Law-Related Education trained teacher-consultants provide practical lessons and strategies to utilize the content in classrooms. All activities are TEKS & TAKS correlated with gifted/talented and advanced placement extensions.
Participants who have attended the first level (101) are eligible to attend an Advanced Institute (201) that focuses on the concepts of Property, Justice/Due Process of Law and Rights Reserved to the States/People through the Bill of Rights. Those who have participated in the Advanced Institute (201) are eligible for the seven-hour Update Session (301). 301 may be repeated any number of times but is only offered at forty-hour institutes. Participants attending 101 as many as five years ago may choose to repeat that session or attend the 201 session.
201:Available to those teachers who have completed the 101 session, the advanced session begins with a look at the “Ladder of the Bill of Rights.” The remainder of the three-day, eighteen-hour institute is spent studying Amendments Two through Ten, along with Supreme Court cases decided under each of these amendments. Break out sessions follow each scholar session with activities on the Bill of Rights.
301:The one-day, seven-hour Update Session is available to those teachers who have previously attended both 101 and 201. Participants will spend most of the time discussing Supreme Court cases that have been decided during the past few years with the scholars.

Being An American: Exploring the Ideals that Unites Us institute will focus on five areas of study: The United States Constitution, The United States Bill of Rights, America's Civic Values, American Heroes: Past and Present, American Citizenship: A Personal Response.
