TxDOT Workshop

DRIVING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD

STOP!  Don't speed past this training opportunity which combines social studies skills and important traffic safety issues.  Participants will receive lessons and relevant information that incorporates specific Texan legislative and judicial processes while encouraging TEKS/TAKS skill development. The content by which these processes are illustrated focus on traffic safety issues, laws and the relevance of these laws in daily experiences. Lessons incorporate the latest Law-Related Education instructional strategies, as well as the opportunity to utilize judges and court support personnel as resource persons in classrooms.  New to the participants this year is a mock trial supplement which incorporates vocabulary development strategies and scripted and non-scripted trials.  Although social study classes will be main focus, other disciplines can readily use the materials.  All participants will receive a kit containing the differentiated units, appropriate support material, class sets of manipulatives for small and large group instruction, and on-line computer games information.  The State Bar of Texas Law-Related Education Department, in conjunction with Law Focused Education, Inc., has teamed with the Texas Municipal Court Education Center to create this workshop. Lunch will be provided for all participants on site.

The units will include:
· lesson plans
· activity sheets,
· class sets of manipulatives
· online computer games

Teachers from across Texas will be invited to attend a one-day workshop on the program during the Summer of 2010, offered in cooperation with the twenty Regional Education Service Centers.  Texas Department of Transportation officials, district traffic safety specialists and judicial leaders will also be invited to attend the workshop.

Our hope is that the social studies teachers will then be prepared to offer the traffic safety program in local classrooms, using municipal judges and court support personnel as resource persons. Classroom instruction throughout the year will be supported by the TMCEC journal, a list serve and a webinar series that offer additional information about traffic safety and will allow for problem solving and idea sharing as to how to teach traffic safety issues and procedures to young people.

The workshop is free of charge and lunch will be provided.
