Hatton W. Sumners
State Bar of Texas Law-Related Education
Austin, TX
July 7-11, 2008
There is no better way to start out your teaching career
than by attending the Hatton W. Sumners/State
Bar of Texas Law-Related Education Social
Studies Student Teacher Institute. Over
the past five years, pre-service through first-year teachers have
enriched their teaching and content knowledge
by completing this program. Our goal is to
expose beginning and future teachers at the
elementary, middle and high school levels
to strategies and programs, which will help them be better
civic educators. The institute content includes
discussions and practical application of
concepts dealing with local, Texas and national
government and the U.S. Constitution. In addition, each level has special programs designed for that grade level. All materials distributed are correlated with the TEKS standards and the TAKS test. Lessons also include gifted and talented/advanced placement extensions.
Who is Eligible?
Pre-Service Teachers, Student Teachers and First-Year Teachers. Participants are provided hotel rooms (shared-three participants per room) for Sunday through Thursday nights, forty-hours of in-service training credit and all materials. This institute is approved by the State Board for Educator Certification for professional development credit.
Please consider the following information when deciding to attend the institute.
New teachers are required by the State of Texas to get 150 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit every five years. You must be certified (passed all exit exams and graduated) before you can begin accumulating these hours.
Regarding the July 7-11, 2008 institute, you have the following options:
- If you are certified by July 17, 2008, all 40 hours will count toward the state requirement of 150 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours every five years.
- If you are not certified by July 17, 2008, you may still attend the institute. You will receive a certificate for 40 hours staff development credit that will help you prepare for your teaching career and that may be listed on your résumé.
- If you do not graduate until 2009, you may still attend the institute this July and will receive valuable training that will help prepare for your student teaching and teaching career.
Your $50.00 holding fee will
be returned after completion of the institute.
Space is limited to sixty participants. The
deadline for applications is May 23,
2008. After registering, if for any reason
you find you cannot attend, please notify
the LRE office at least two weeks prior
to the institute so that your space may
be given to someone on the waiting list,
and your holding fee will be returned.
