In keeping with the stated purpose of the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation ("…to encourage the study, teaching and research into the science and art of self-government….), the State Bar of Texas and the Sumners Foundation joined in a partnership in 1989 to conduct institutes for social studies and other humanities teachers.
The first institute was held in November and December 1990 at St. Mary's Law School in San Antonio. Since that time, institutes have been held in Houston (7), San Antonio (6), Austin (6), Laredo (4), Belton (4), Dallas (3), Corpus Christi (4), Midland (3), El Paso (4), Abilene (3), Texarkana (3), Beaumont (3), Wichita Falls (3), Ft. Worth (2), Amarillo (3), Lubbock (2), Del Rio (2), College Station (2), Nacogdoches (2), San Marcos, Tyler (2), Huntsville, Galveston, Edinburg, Tyler, Euless, Richardson, McAllen, Uvalde, Victoria, Mansfield, Carrollton, Weslaco, Mesquite, Arlington, Edinburg (2) and Lewisville.
In 1995, a new Advanced Institute (201) was added for those teachers who had previously attended the original institute, and in 1998, an Update (301) session was added for those who had previously attended both 101 and 201. In addition, a Student Teacher Institute was begun in 1997 for those students either entering student teaching or just completing it, plus those teachers who have just completed their first year in the classroom.
As of August 2004, over 4,000 teachers have been trained in the above institutes.
For 2004-2005, institutes are being planned for, Ft. Bend, Garland, Austin (student teachers), Amarillo (201 ONLY) and Corpus Christi (201 ONLY). (See registration information for specific dates.)
Staff members for the institutes include scholars Dr. Isidore Starr, Professor Jerry Perry, Dr. Mel Hailey and Dr. Jerry Polinard. Elementary consultants include Kathy Aldridge, Sue Bilbrey, Polly James and Jeanne Wray. Holly Boyle, Barbara Mayo, Jean Price and Janie Worst serve as middle school consultants, and high school consultants are Carrie Barrett, Martin Conrardy, Jane Ann Craig and Tony Palagonia. The Hatton W. Sumners coordinator is Yvonne Greenwood, and the administrative assistant is Suzanne Nelson. |
